A US couple who tattooed six of their children with a device made from a guitar string will face child cruelty charges.

This is not one of the children from the story...The New York Daily News said Patty Jo Marsh and her husband Jacob Edwards Bartels, of Summerville, Georgia, were released on bail over the weekend after being held in custody since late last year.

They posted a property bond of $US10,000 ($11,864) each.

They came to the attention of authorities after the biological mother of two of the children noticed marks on their hands that wouldn’t wash off.

The children are aged 10 to 17. Five of them received small cross tattoos on their hands, while another child had “mom and dad” inked on a hand.

The tattoo gun used was a plastic pen with a needle made from a guitar string. It was connected to an electric motor, police said.

Marsh told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the children wanted the tattoos.

“I’m their mother,” she said. “Shouldn’t I be able to decide if they get one?”

“They weren’t hurt by them. We would never do anything to hurt them.”
